7th grade Latin Final

Salvete omnes!

The final exam is coming up, so here are the details: 60 multiple-choice questions; you only need to answer 50 of them (yes, I am too nice). Each question is worth two points (making the exam worth 100 points). This counts for 20% of your end-of-the-year grade, so take it seriously!

I e-mailed everybody all of the information that they need: the outline, study questions, study sheets, and where to find useful information in the textbooks. SO...there are no excuses for not having all of the information (we even copied the answers down for the practice questions IN CLASS, so EVERYBODY is up-to-date!).

The questions are general and are mostly about culture, mythology, history, and derivatives (only a few grammar and translation questions), so do not freak out if you do not remember the tiny details. Besides, you do not have to answer TEN of the questions so that is also a good safety net.

Feel free to ask questions!

Septimi (VII): Quiz on Chapter 17 vocab (see below) and irregular verb forms + translations (present tense ONLY -- see page 128).
Chapter 17: caelum; aedificium; caupona; caupo; periculosus; custodire
Irregular verb part: ONLY PRESENT TENSE!!! There will be a word bank with all of the forms (out of order) and you will have to put them back into the correct order (based on the chart on page 128) -- you also have to translate them correctly into English "e.g. "volo = I want; vis = you want; vult = he/she/it wants; volumus = we want; vultis = y'all want; volunt = they want."

*N.B. The imperfect tense quiz for irregular verbs will be next week (same style) --> eugepae! Easy points!

Due Monday (should have been completed in class on Wednesday - Friday): ex. 16 b, c, & d in TB; Word Study IV (pg. 123-125 in TB); Chapter 17 translation (alone!) - focus on translating the VERBS correctly!; ex. 17b & c in TB.
There is no excuse for this work to be late. There was plenty of time to work on it in class; in addition, many students e-mailed me for help, so one cannot use the excuse of my absence. It was not on the blog site as homework because it should have been finished in class.

Quiz on Tuesday, March 27th on Imperfect Tense verbs: How is it translated? ("was/were _____ing"); fill out chart with endings ("-bam, -bas, -bat; -bamus, -batis, -bant"); Conjugate two verbs into the imperfect tense (just like class work. e.g. amabam, amabas, amabat...); Translate from Latin-to-English (e.g. amabam = "I was loving") and English-to-Latin (e.g. we were annoying = "vexabamus"). Use your notes to study for the quiz!

Chapters 6-10 vocabulary quiz on Friday, March 30th. See previous posts for list of words. Multiple-choice.

Pronunciation Guidelines

Here are some guidelines for Latin pronunciation:

“veni, vidi, vici” ("I came, I saw, I conquered") pronounced “way-nee, wee-dee, wee-kee”

- No j or w in Latin.
- “I” before a vowel = y sound (e.g. “iam” is pronounced “yahm”)
- V = w (e.g. “villa” = “weella”)
- K, y, z rare à k, y and z = Greek letters

Most sounds similar to English:

B before s/t = “p” (urbs = “urps”; observat = “opserwat”)
C is ALWAYS hard (cadit = “kadit”)
G is always hard (as in “get”) – gemit
I= y before vowel (via = “wee-ya”)
R=rolled (ramus)
S like “sing” not like a “z” (servus = “ser-woos”)
V=w (villa = “wee-lla”)

Vowels à macrons (the lines over the letters) vs. without macrons. Letters with macrons = 2x longer

Short: Long:
A= “alike” (ad) ā= “father” (clāmat = “claaahhhmaht”)
E= “pet” (ex) ē = “date” (dēscendit = “day-sken-dit”)
I = “sip” (Italia) ī = “sleep” (īratus = “ee-rah-toos”)
O= “for” (arborem) ō = holy (in hortō)
U = foot (ubi) ū = boot (ūlūlat = “ooo-loo-laht”)

Dipthongs: 2 vowels making one sound. Examples in English? “th” “sh” “ng”
Ae = “sky” (amicae = “ah-mee-keye”) au = “How” (audit = “oww-dit”)
Ei = say (deinde “day-n-day”)

8th Grade Update

Salvete omnes! I have changed the due date for the Pompeii assignment to Tuesday, March 27th.
There is also a quiz on Tuesday, March 27th, on Chapter 25 vocabulary (NOT Chapter 24!) and the pluperfect and future perfect tense.
The words for the quiz include: tumultus, excitatus, de omnibus rebus, abhinc, taberna, poeta, aliquid, lapis, oppressus, trahere, conficere.
For the verb section, you will have to form verbs into the pluperfect and future perfect tense using the 3rd principal part; you will also have to translate verbs correctly and fill out ending charts (ie: 'eram, eras, erat...').

Temporary Haitus of Blog

I would like to see if the seventh graders can "swim" on their own and I will not be using the Blog for the next few weeks. I would like the seventh graders to become accustomed to taking the homework down in class from the board. If you are absent, then you should contact a reliable friend (don't have a reliable friend? Then find one!).

I know that this is an inconvenience, but at this stage I would like to help the seventh graders become more independent. Please let me know if you have any questions.

A few reminders: HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT!!!!! The homework/classwork that I assign is DIRECTLY related to what I ask on the quizzes/tests, so if you can do your homework/classwork, then you can do the quiz/test! Ask questions if you get the answers wrong!
Some of you have F averages for the second quarter -- ALREADY!!!! Remember that one may turn in late homework for partial credit up to five days after it was due. You are shooting yourself in both feet by not doing homework -- 1) you get a "zero" in your average; and 2) you are not practicing for the quiz/test (read: LESS STUDY TIME if you do homework!).

STORYTIME PROJECTS ARE DUE THIS MONDAY!!!!!!! (9/25) Everything MUST be ready to go (ie: computer, poster, etc.) when you walk into class! If you have printer/computer problems, you MUST e-mail me by Sunday night at 9PM. It should be done by then anyway, since you have had two weeks to do it.

Latin Club is TOMORROW (Thursday) during lunch on the patio. :)

The format of this Friday's seventh grade quiz goes as follows: 15 points to vocabulary on the first 13 words of Chapter 4 (12 "regular" vocabulary questions, and 3 questions of "draw a picture with the following caption..."); 6 points to grammar - changing singular to plural and vice versa (both nouns and verbs); 4 points to Latin composition - write 4 sentences in Latin (given in English); 5 points to the Roman dress terms (tunica, toga virilis, toga praetexta, solae, bulla, stola, palla). Please e-mail if you have any questions! It's better to be safe than sorry!

There is a not-so-Pop Quiz for 8th graders this FRIDAY -- STUDY YOUR NOUN ENDINGS!!!! (most people have weaknesses on the neuter nouns, so make sure you know them!)

A note about pop quizzes...

Yes, you will have pop quizzes this year. It is to help you spread out your studying (so you do not cram at the end of the week and start crying, etc. Crying too often can give you sinus infections!). The pop quizzes will also help you in that you will not have as much material to study for one huge test.
Keep in mind that pop quizzes are based on either the homework the night before or something that you should definitely know (like "puella = the girl"). Therefore, do your homework well so you cut down on study time in the end (and for the unfortunate event that I feel like being evil and giving a pop quiz).
The moral of the story: DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!

Tuesday (due Wednesday): Read "Cronus" in yellow book (pg. 14-15) -- make sure you know the story (HINT HINT!!!); finish Activity 2g in WB if not finished in class.

Thursday (for Friday): STUDY!!!!! Bring blank flashcards to class if you wish to make vocab cards on flashcards. We will do that after the quiz.

Make sure to study a few vocabulary words each day! It takes less than 5 minutes, but will cut loads of study time off in the long run! Make sure to complete the homework that I give you -- it is directly related to your quizzes and exams, so completing it (well) will also cut down on study time.

Well, tonight is the Ice Cream Social - I am so excited to see everybody again! The classroom is almost set up - I will have the projector permanently hooked up to my computer so we can watch many PowerPoint presentations (more fun than my handwriting!), and there is a nice corner that you can sit and "hang out." There are a bunch of stressbusters materials, too, so you can read fun books and comics if you need to smile. :)

Pre-Season Training...mwahahaha!!!

I have finished preparing the plans for pre-season training (aka Review) -- very exciting! I am thinking of crazy ways to get those wheels turning again. We will be composing more Latin, which will be quite "interesting," in addition to even SPEAKING Latin! Better get those vocabulary flash cards back out!

In other news, here is a link to an image of Mt. Etna, a volcano in Sicily, erupting! That is where Vulcan and the other cyclopes have their blacksmith "shop." I guess they are still at work!

I saw a cool thing on the Discovery Health Channel last night -- it was a show called "I am My Own Twin:" it was about a disease called Chimerism, which is when two fertilized embryos fuse into one embryo. What does that mean? That a person can have two separate sets of DNA in their body -- for example, in some hairs, they could have their own DNA, but in some of their other hairs, they could have their "twin's" DNA. This caused major problems for people because they had never heard of people having two totally different sets of DNA. In one case, a woman was accused of not being the mother of her children, but then they tested the babies' DNA and compared it to her siblings' DNA, and it seemed as if the babies had DNA from the woman's husband and the woman's brother! OBVIOUSLY that was impossible, but that proved that she had a second set of DNA in her body, which should have been a separate person. They do not know why these embryos fused to become one, but it happens!

Anyway, how is this connected to Latin? Look at the name, Chimerism: people who have this disorder are called Chimeras, like the mythological monster that had the tail of a snake, the body of a goat, and the head of a lion. Isn't that so cool?! It is just like the people -- part of them is one person, and another part is another person!

I am so excited! I have begun doing lesson plans for next year, and boy are you in for a year of craziness! Sure, it will be difficult, but in the end, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. :)
I think the biggest change for next year will be that you will be COMPOSING Latin in addition to READING it (ie: NOT translating and putting the words together like a puzzle). Yes, you will have to use those little noggins to figure out how to express yourself. Your understanding of the grammar will improve exponentially because you are writing your own things. It will make class more fun, too.
My summer is going well, though. I am working on lesson plans (which is actually FUN -- I am doing the things that take a lot of time, like PPTs, the soundtrack, etc., so that way I can just focus on the basic lesson plans once school starts).
